The Lifestyle of Rock Climbing

There are two very different kinds of rock climbers. There are ones that do it for recreational fun and then there are the professional rock climbers that dedicate their lives to the sport. It’s very interesting to learn about their lifestyles and the challenges they face in order to travel North America and live their dream. The people who are serious about climbing give up their sedentary life at home with a job and instead get a van, a computer, and all there rock climbing gear together and just go. Most people take up part time jobs or online jobs to support themselves along the way(Rickly 4) The main factor that influences this mobile lifestyle is the love of the sport. They all want to rock climb as much as possible. Living in one location limits where you can go on a weekend and they don’t want to have a limit, they want to be free. Being held down is not something they want to deal with so they give up that lifestyle and travel around the world visiting location to location climbing all the mountains they can find. Some people like to stay at one location for a while and travel around that location from time to time while others like to always be on the move. Travel circuits are groups of people that travel around to compete in this sport around the country or around the globe. Many travel circuits can be seen going from location to location climbing the most famous rock faces in the world. Seasons can be an issue when wanting to visit some locations so it is always best to start in the Northwest and work your way down to the South West from Summer to Winter. Living this type of life style can although be very dangerous not only from a sport perspective but also a financial standpoint. If anything were to happen per say there van how are they going to be able to fix it. They can only afford the bare minimum to provide for themselves let alone putting in a lot of money into their now broken van. If a climber becomes seriously injured what are they going to when they can’t afford the hospital bill? These are the types of worries about this kind of lifestyle that you must take in order to pursue your love for the sport nomadically. This lifestyle has also proven to be very lonely. The loneliness results from the day-to-day activities when climbers aren’t actually climbing either due to physical or environmental restraints. It can also be lonely in the fact that there are very few women that participate in this sport let alone partake in the lifestyle. The nomadic lifestyle is not for everyone and it is something that people should take in to consideration very seriously given the financial and emotional risks you are putting yourself in.
